Earlier this month, a Macon woman died in a motorcycle accident that occurred in

the 1700 block on Rocky Creek Road in south Macon. Although we typically use the term “accident,” the unfortunate truth of these incidents is that they are often preventable and should have never occurred.

The accident happened December 6 at 4:41 p.m., according to Bibb County coroner Leon Jones. The 54-year-old woman was coming from the annual Main Street Christmas Parade. She was taken to the Medical Center, Navicent Health where she was pronounced dead from multiple force blunt trauma to the head.

Police say an 89-year-old Macon woman was driving a GMC Safari van when she pulled out of Autumn Trace Apartments and in front of the woman’s motorcycle. The 89-year-old, who was taken to a local hospital, survived the crash.

Motorcycle crashes happen for a number of reasons, including:

• Head-on collisions: Often fatal, this occurs when a car or truck hits a motorcyclist head-on.
• Rear-end collisions: This happens when a vehicle collides with the rear of a motorcycle, oftentimes, because a driver does not notice the motorcycle ahead of them.
• Left-hand turns: These incidents happen when a vehicle is turning left onto a road in front of an oncoming motorcycle and does not see the motorcyclist.
