Sadly, each year, an estimated 4,000 Americans are killed in commercial and fatal truck accidents and their family members are left to pick up the pieces after their death.
Fatal truck accidents can occur for a number of reasons, including:
- Driver error (reckless actions like speeding or aggressive driving)
- Driver fatigue
- Driver inexperience
- Truck part failure (including tire blowouts)
- Overloaded or oversized tractor-trailers
- Operating in poor weather conditions (fog, snow or rain)
- The failure to install underride protections
Due to the violent nature of truck accidents, aside from death, crashes can result in spinal cord injury, amputations, broken bones and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), which can lead to incredibly expensive rehabilitation and therapy for victims.
Some commercial trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Because of this, drivers and operators are expected to adhere to rules involving rest periods, speed, lighting, weight compliance and maintenance. If a trucking company and/or driver fails to follow the law, he or she, or it, can be held liable following a truck accident.
Three Killed in Soperton Truck Accident
Unfortunately, on June 19, three Georgia residents were killed when a commercial truck struck the back of their vehicle on Interstate 16 in Soperton, about an hour east of Macon.
According to the Associated Press, the victims included a 27-year-old Calhoun resident, a 28-year-old Atlanta resident and a 23-year-old Aragon resident. All three victims were in a Toyota Scion traveling westbound on the interstate when it was struck from behind by the tractor-trailer.
The truck driver, 56, a Lyons resident, was also injured in the accident. It remains unclear why the truck struck the vehicle and an investigation into the accident is ongoing. Officials with Georgia State Patrol said charges are pending.
