What Can Be Done To Improve Trucker Safety In Georgia?

During a recent panel in Garden City, experts called on law enforcement in Georgia to do more about trucking safety on the state’s roadways. Many Georgians say they don’t feel safe on the road with semi-trucks.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said policing have been spending more time on patrol and making sure truck drivers are going through inspection stations. However, inspections don’t stop a driver from dozing at the wheel.

Bob Dallas of Road Safe America said electronic driving logs and collision avoidance systems can help protect truckers and other drivers on the road. Changes on the road need to be made first though, he said.

Dallas said policies that don’t compensate drivers by mile or give them a commission that’s based on time need to be implemented.

Dallas gave the example of a driver stuck at a loading dock for three hours because a shipper chose to be late. Dallas said in this instance the driver will eat that time and likely try to make it up with excessive speed or driving over the amount of hours that driver is supposed to be on the road.

Experts say some of the responsibility rests with the car drivers.

Distracted driving, weaving in and out of traffic, and tailgating can all add to the dangers of semi-trucks.
