Driver in Deadly Big Rig Crash Arrested in Georgia

A horrific truck accident in Palm Springs, California left 13 people dead and 31 injured in 2016. The truck driver fled the state, but was recently arrested in Georgia. According to a multi-agency fugitive task force, 51-year-old Bruce Guilford was arrested and charged with 13 counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, 12 counts of felony reckless driving causing injury and 17 misdemeanor counts of reckless driving causing injury. The agency says that Guilford fell asleep at the wheel of his truck while stopped in a construction-related traffic brake. When his lane was reopened, Guilford kept his brakes engaged and did not move. A motor coach then crashed into the back of the big-rig, killing 13 and injuring 31 passengers. Later, California Highway Patrol revealed that Guilford frequently violated hours-of-service rules by driving more hours than he was allowed and falsifying his travel logs. The FMCSA Just Killed the Sleep Apnea Rule for Truckers

The sleep apnea rule is dead in the water, according to a notice from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The sleep apnea rule was intended to help medical examiners, carrier employers and truck drivers know what conditions or combinations of conditions would prompt a driver to be referred to an in-lab sleep apnea test. It would also lay out treatment protocols for all involved parties. What is sleep apnea? It is a disorder where a person’s breathing stops and starts repeatedly while sleeping. There are many forms of sleep apnea, with obstructive sleep apnea the most common. Several factors can increase risk for sleep apnea, including being overweight, hypertension, diabetes, age, alcohol and smoking. What Can Go Wrong When Truckers Drive Fatigued?

It took nearly a week, but crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation finally finished repair work on a section of I-20 that had traffic backed up for miles on a daily basis. The damage was caused when an 18 wheeler lost control and flipped over, closing several lanes and destroying a guardrail. Luckily no one was injured, but the accident could have been far worse. What Can Go Wrong When Truckers Drive Fatigued? Police reported that the truck driver in this accident was fatigued and fell asleep at the wheel. This caused the truck to overturn and damage the Savannah River Bridge. The damage forced GDoT crews to delay the slab work they were doing on the other side of the road so the bridge could be repaired and traffic could return to normal.
