New Roundabouts in Macon Proposed; Will They Reduce Car Accidents?

Macon Personal Injury Attorney | Georgia…The Georgia Department of Transportation thinks that Highway 247 at the intersection of Broadway and Houston could use a roundabout. What do you think?

Do Roundabouts Prevent Accidents?

Did you know that studies have shown that roundabouts are safer than traditional stop signs or stoplight-controlled intersections? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Federal Highway Administration report that roundabouts lead to:

  • 37 percent decrease in overall collisions
  • 75 percent decrease in injury collisions
  • 90 percent decrease in fatality collisions
  • 40 percent decrease in pedestrian collisions

Why are roundabouts so much safer than traditional intersections?

  • In roundabouts, drivers must slow down and yield to traffic. Roundabouts tend to have an average speed of around 15 to 20 miles per hour. Because cars in roundabouts move so slowly, there is less potential for injuries and fatalities.
  • No lights – specifically, no yellow lights that cause some drivers to speed up to beat the red.
  • One-way travel. Because everyone in a roundabout is going the same way, there is less potential for T-bone accidents as well as wrong-way collisions.

With all this in mind, it’s fairly obvious that roundabouts could give Macon significant improvements in terms of our car accident, injury and fatality rates. Additionally, roundabouts are less expensive than traffic signals and work well even when there are power outages.
