Macon Pedestrian Safety Review Board Visits Dangerous Areas

Macon Personal Injury Attorney | Georgia…The Macon Pedestrian Safety Review Board recently took a trip around Macon to survey some of the city’s most dangerous roads for pedestrians. Among those: Pio Nono Ave., Rice Mill Road and Anthony Road.

One of the problems noted by the board was the lack of lighting on some of the road, making it excessively difficult to see anyone crossing at night. Other problems included lack of sidewalks, a lack of crosswalks and relatively high speed limits for the area.

Following the field trip, review board members voted on several recommendations to fix some of these problems including sidewalk improvements and streetlight installation.

Tips for Pedestrians to Avoid Danger

  • Walk against traffic, not with it. This gives you precious reaction time to avoid injury if a car veers toward you.
  • If you are going to be walking at night, be sure to wear bright clothing with reflective material, if possible. Carry a flashlight or use a flashlight app on your phone.
  • Don’t use headphones! It can be tempting to use music to help pass the time you spend walking, but it makes it much more difficult to hear approaching danger.
  • Follow the rules! Obey crossing signs and never assume a driver will give you the right of way. Make every effort to make eye contact with any drivers if you are crossing a road.
  • Avoid alcohol if you have a long walk ahead. Half of all traffic crashes resulting in pedestrian deaths involve alcohol, and 34 percent actually involve drunk pedestrians, not drivers.
