Could A New Vehicle Safety Proposal Create As Many Problem As It Solves?

A draft proposal to improve vehicle safety and security may create as many problems as it solves.

Last month a committee held the hearing to discuss the draft designed to improve safety practices and make carmakers more accountable.

NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said the draft would require the creation of a system to notify owners of recalled vehicles when they register vehicles with state motor vehicle agencies.

While such a system is potentially useful, the technology has not yet been implemented, Rosekind said.

While the draft also recognizes the importance of cybersecurity, privacy and technology innovations, its provisions might have the opposite of the desired effect. The proposals may seriously undermine NHTSA’s efforts to ensure safety, Rosekind said.

Rosekind cautioned that keeping Americans in the dark about vehicle safety problems could have fatal consequences.
