If you are like most drivers in Macon, you have probably found yourself sharing the road with a semitruck. And, like those other drivers, you more than likely feel at least a little nervous when in such close proximity to one of those large trucks. This feeling is not unusual and occurs for good cause: An accident with a semi can have catastrophic results.
Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce your stress when driving near semis and the chance of an accident. Here are a few things you should know when sharing the road with a semitruck.
Remember your defensive driving
Defensive driving is important to practice every time you get behind the wheel. However, when you are sharing the road with a semi, it is even more vital. Because of the size and weight of semis, they are slower to react to things like a vehicle that suddenly cuts them off, hazards in the road and other dangerous situations. This means that you have to stay alert to what is going on around your vehicle and the semi.
Keep your distance
If something goes wrong and the semi has to swerve, a tire blows out or it comes to an abrupt stop, driving too close to it could put you at risk. When driving near semis, always keep as much distance as possible between your vehicle and the truck. The extra space could give you just enough time to get clear of a dangerous situation.
Don't ride in the blind spots
Semitrucks have very large blind spots with the largest being on its right side. Not only can the driver not see the next immediate lane, but they usually cannot see three or more lanes over. Also, the area directly in front of the cab and in the rear of the trailer are significant blind spots. When sharing the road with a semi, avoid these areas as much as possible and try to stay in an area where you can see the driver and they can see you.
In addition to the above, you should pass semis as quickly and safely as possible, avoid cutting off large commercial vehicles, dim your brights and always use your signal. While these tips can help you stay safe, sometimes it is not possible to avoid a truck accident. If you have been the victim of a vehicle collision with a semitruck, you might be able to file a claim for your injuries and other damages.
