Important tips to be a more defensive driver

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2019 | Uncategorized |

Each year, there are roughly 300,000 car accidents on Georgia roads. As that number increases, so does the number of serious injuries from those crashes.

A car accident can cause severe and even life-changing damage in just seconds. The risk of an accident is even higher this time of year with wet and uncertain weather conditions. It is more important than ever for drivers young and old to be defensive behind the wheel. Here are a few essential tips to become a more defensive driver and help prevent accidents:

1. Always stay alert behind the wheel

This tip may seem obvious. It is one of the first things students learn in driver’s education courses.

However, although many forms of distracted driving are against the law, it is still on the rise. There are many instances of texting while driving, as well as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol that draw drivers’ attentions away from the road.

Staying alert can help combat the dangers of distracted driving. So, it is important to:

  • Always keep your eyes on the road
  • Keep your hands on the wheel at all times
  • Do not let your mind wander, and stay focused on the task at hand

2. Respect other drivers (but always keep an eye on them)

It is important to respect other drivers on the road. However, you can only trust your own abilities behind the wheel. Driving defensively while respecting other drivers’ space can help you avoid instances of road rage when other drivers cut you off or make poor decisions.

If you respect other drivers’ space, you should have enough time to react to any dangers on the road. Some easy ways to respect other drivers include:

  • Staying out of others’ blind spots and frequently checking your own
  • Maintaining about four seconds of space behind the vehicle in front of you
  • Following all traffic signals and laws

3. Do not speed

Another way to respect other drivers and drive defensively is to avoid speeding. Speeding is one of the most common traffic violations, but it is also one of the most dangerous. Even if you are focused on driving, speeding can significantly lower your reaction time and result in a collision.

Maintaining the speed limit can help you stay aware of your surroundings and keep yourself and others safer on the road.

Georgia roads can be unpredictable. However, being a more defensive driver and teaching younger generations to drive defensively can lower the chances of serious accidents.
