Government Investigates Goodyear RV Tire Deaths and Injuries

iStock-121961016-resize-300x199.jpgThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating crashes involving Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's G159 motorhome tires. NHTSA received claims that these tires are responsible for dozens of crashes that led to 95 deaths or injuries since the 1990s. The investigation began last year after a judge unsealed internal Goodyear documents. As part of its investigation, NHTSA will seek field performance, design and safety data from Goodyear.

Goodyear has faced numerous lawsuits for crashes involving its G159 tires. However, safety advocates accuse Goodyear of using confidential settlements and court orders to conceal the dangers associated with this product.

According to safety advocates, G159 tires are not safe to use on motorhomes that travel at highway speeds (faster than 65 miles per hour). Lawsuits against Goodyear argue that G159 tires are only safe to use on delivery trucks. When these tires are used on motorhomes, they are prone to heat-induced blowouts and tread separation. Goodyear reportedly knew of these dangers but continued to sell the tires to be used on motorhomes.

Goodyear manufactured G159 tires between 1996 and 2003. Reports of deaths and injuries continued for years after production stopped. NHTSA says it has received reports of 57 deaths or injuries caused by the tires between 2003 and 2015. During its investigation, NHTSA will look closely at injury claim data involving the tires.

Can I File an Auto Defect Lawsuit?

Automakers and auto parts manufacturers must ensure their products do not contain design or manufacturing defects. Even if a company issues a recall for a product, they may still be liable for any injuries or deaths caused by the product.
