What Are the Leading Causes of Truck Accidents?

iStock_38673112_LARGE-resize (1).jpgOn October 18, a multi-vehicle accident in Twiggs County led to the death of a truck driver. Two-tractor trailers and a car were involved in the crash, which ripped the cabin completely off one truck and killed its driver. Two other victims were hospitalized with non-fatal injuries.

On October 15, an accident on Interstate 85 killed a woman and her infant. The accident happened when a semi-truck slid off the curve on an on-ramp. The driver failed to negotiate the curve, lost control and crashed into another vehicle.

Common Causes of Truck Accidents

While truck drivers do sometimes cause accidents, it is often passenger vehicles and other nearby vehicles that cause truck accidents. Most commonly, drivers fail to respect the semi-truck's performance capabilities, such as the long distances required for a truck to brake or the blind spots that truck driver's deal with. Drivers might commit dangerous acts like driving in the truck's "no-zones," changing lanes abruptly in front of a truck, merging improperly in front of a truck or getting into the right lane as a truck makes a right turn.

Truck drivers can also be the ones responsible for accidents. This is due to the inherent nature of the job and systems of compensation that encourage drivers to go faster and drive for longer to meet sometimes unreasonable schedules and expectations. Driver fatigue, drugs and alcohol and conditions like sleep apnea can also contribute to semi-truck accidents.
