Road Debris Causes Hundreds of Central Georgia Accidents Annually

iStock-92373920-resize-300x200.jpgHave you ever had to swerve out of the way of a sudden piece of debris in the road? Have you ever been driving behind a flatbed truck and worried whether the cargo on the back was truly secure? Or worse - has your car ever been struck by a flying object that shouldn't have been in the road?

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, from 2014 to 2016, 813 accidents occurred in Central Georgia due to flying debris on the roads. In those accidents, 66 people suffered injury and four died. Police say that these accidents can be difficult to investigate, because often the vehicles that drop the debris are long gone by the time emergency responders arrive.

How to Avoid Flying Debris and What to Do If You Are Hit

The easiest way to avoid flying debris is to leave several car lengths between your vehicle and the one in front of you. For every 10 miles per hour you are moving, there should be one car length between you and the vehicle in front. So, if you are driving on I-75 at 70 miles per hour, there should be seven car lengths of empty road in front. This way, you have some time to identify any potential risks and dodge them if necessary.

If you do happen to be struck by flying debris:

  • Inspect your vehicle and photograph all visible damage. Have a mechanic check the vehicle's internals for any damage.
  • Call your insurance company to report the accident.
  • If you believe you may have been injured in any way, seek immediate medical attention.

If you believe that another party's negligence has caused you injury while driving in Central Georgia, you may have a claim against that party. Our law firm is highly skilled in representing victims of automobile accidents in Central Georgia.
