How Safe Are Georgia Hospitals?

When it comes to patient safety, how do Georgia hospitals compare to others around the country?

According to the Leapfrog Group, a patient safety organization, not particularly well. A recent report by the group scored Georgia hospitals among the lowest in terms of top safety ratings in the country. Fewer than 20 percent of Georgia hospitals earned an “A” grade in patient safety. Georgia ranked 40th in the country for percentages of hospitals with top safety ratings. Compared to last year’s ranking, Georgia’s has not shifted at all.

The Leapfrog Group issues these hospital safety reports every six months and ranks more than 2,600 hospitals across the country. The group looks at factors including medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections to determine grades. The group creates these reports to help consumers become more knowledgeable about hospital safety records.

While Georgia’s score this year was not stellar, none of the ranked hospitals in Georgia received the lowest grade of “F.” Hospitals with F rankings were located in California, D.C., Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi, New York and Tennessee.
