Georgia Car Accident Victim to Receive Specialized Prosthesis

Losing a limb is one of the most devastating injuries one can suffer. It can lead to pain, expensive medical bills as well as disability and a diminished capacity for earning that can make life difficult. Medical science has made leaps and bounds in terms of prosthetics for victims of amputations. However, these prosthetics are often very expensive – anywhere from a couple thousand dollars to tens of thousands. And they tend to last only a few years of wear and tear – this isn’t a one-time cost.

A New Prosthesis

A Georgia man who lost his leg in a car accident will be one of the first local participants in a pilot study for a new prosthetic leg developed by Mercer University’s Department of Biological Engineering. His name is Ricky Lawrence, a 49-year-old man who was driving in September of 2010 when he saw a woman who had been in a wreck on the side of the road. He got out to help and was hit by another vehicle. The hit pinned him against the woman’s car and crushed his lower body. He lost his leg as a result.

Lawrence, a photographer, was fitted for the new prosthesis around Labor Day. His previous prosthesis weighed seven pounds and was not always comfortable, he said. The new one is much lighter and gives him more control of his leg. And the cost is much more appealing, only $150.

Hopefully, the testing of this new prosthesis goes well and more car accident victims who lose a leg will be able to take advantage of these new developments in medical science.
