Fatal Work Accident on Construction Site: Statistics in Georgia

iStock-466775191-resize-300x200.jpgA 20-year-old man from Rex, Georgia died in a construction accident in mid-September. The accident happened at a work site at 1110 West Peachtree Street in Atlanta.

The worker's employer, Batson-Cook Construction, stated that there was an equipment accident on the site that led to the worker's death. When asked if the equipment was a crane, the president of the company said that all he knew what that the accident involved equipment that was placing concrete. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the accident.

A friend of the victim spoke anonymously with reporters to give his thoughts on what might have happened. He theorized that a shackle used to connect a vat of cement to a crane failed. This may have been because the shackle was made of nylon instead of steel. Due to wear and tear, it could have failed, dropping the concrete on the victim.

Fatal Occupational Injuries in Georgia

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014 there were 148 total workplace deaths in Georgia. That number is an increase of 31 from the previous year. Fatal work accidents in Georgia range from the lowest, 101, in 2012 to the highest, 249, in 1994, according to the same report.

Nearly one-fourth of fatal work accidents in the country occur in the construction industry. The leading causes of these deaths are known as the "Fatal Four," which consist of the following:

  • Falls
  • Struck by object
  • Electrocution
  • Caught-in/between

OSHA estimates that if we could eliminate the Fatal Four, we could save 600 lives every year.
