What Will the Largest Study of Student Athlete Concussions Tell Us?

Traumatic brain injuries are one of the leading causes of hospital visits for young children, and most of those injuries turn out to be concussions. Whether the injury is from a child falling off a swing, or is from that child being tackled while playing football, concussions are a serious injury. However, there may be a new tool in the fight against these injuries.

The Largest Study of Student Athlete Concussions Is Almost Here

Concussions can be caused by a simple blow to the head, but their lingering effects could cause lasting damage. Scientific studies show that these effects can include antisocial behavior, poor performance in school, and even depression. Even more concerning is the fact that these symptoms worsen if the child suffers another impact while injured. This can be a big concern for the parents of student athletes.

Student athlete concussions are a fact of playing many youth sports, yet most schools and state agencies don't keep track of these injuries. Because of this lack of monitoring, the country at large doesn't know how many children are affected by concussions, but that will soon change. Texas has rallied its resources to create a database that will log the brain injuries-including concussions-suffered by students. It promises to be the largest such study ever undertaken.

The University Interscholastic League along with UT Southwestern will run the database that will log these injuries. It will provide numbers to help determine how many concussions student athletes are getting and how long most kids suffer symptoms from these injuries.

Do you think this study will help reduce concussions among children? Do you think Georgia could benefit from such a program? Log on to our Twitter and Facebook pages for more info, and check in with your Macon traumatic brain injury lawyers right here!
