Summer Camp Negligence: Family Sues after Child Drowns

iStock-533992636-resize-300x200.jpgWhen you send your children to summer day camp, you expect that the camp counselors and supervisors will keep them safe. This is especially true when you send young children away. But when negligence occurs, your child can be exposed to dangers, including injury and, in the worst cases, wrongful death.

In July, a group of children were attending Camp Cricket Summer Day Camp at Cochran Mills Nature Center and walked with four adults to eat lunch near a waterfall area. After the lunch, the group of 13 children were allowed to splash in a shallow adjacent creek. When they gathered to leave, counselors realized one child was missing.

Police discovered him in a nearby pool of water, unresponsive. CPR was administered and the boy was transported to the hospital, where he died.

According to weekly itineraries his parents received, swimming was not a scheduled event. Moreover, the boy's family chose the day camp specifically to avoid water-based activities because their son could not swim.

In a statement to ABC News, Reg Griffin, the chief communications officer at Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, Camp Cricket Summer Day Camp was an unlicensed program that the state was not aware of until the drowning of the 5-year-old boy.

If your child suffers an injury or wrongful death at summer camp, discuss your case with an attorney. The death of a child is a tragic event and there is a lot of work you will have to do, including funeral planning and mourning. An attorney can help take some of the work off your hands to give you the time you need to properly grieve.
