Georgia Woman Cautions Against Common Car Passenger Behavior

iStock-622533360-resize-300x200.jpgA Georgia woman is warning against a common passenger behavior: putting your feet on the dashboard.

It is an easy enough mistake to make as a passenger, especially on long car rides. But in doing so, you open yourself up to much more serious injuries if you are involved in a car accident.

The woman, Audra Tatum, is a mother of three from Walker County. In 2015, she was riding with her husband to pick up her children when a car cut in front of her, causing a T-bone accident. Everyone riding in the car walked away from the scene with cuts and bruises - except Tatum. She was riding with her feet on the dashboard, and when the air bags deployed, the force threw her right leg toward her face. In the end, Tatum was left with a broken nose, ankle, arm and femur.

It has been two years since, and Tatum still struggles with everyday tasks. She is unable to work because of her injuries, but she spends her time now educating the public on the dangers you expose yourself to when you place your feet on the dashboard.

How to Protect Yourself from Injury during a Car Accident

Here are a few quick tips to minimize injury in a car accident.

  1. Make sure your headrest is level with your head. Too low, and your head could whip back over the restraint.
  2. Keep your head as close to the headrest as possible.
  3. Don't sit too close to the steering wheel or dashboard. If an airbag deploys and you are too close, it will hit you at full speed, which is enough to break bones.
  4. Always, always, always wear a seat belt, even in the back seat.
  5. Keep your feet on the floor.
