Fiery I-16 Truck Accident Claims 4th Victim

iStock-188108555-resize-300x200.jpgWe wrote recently about a fiery pileup involving multiple vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, on I-16 in Macon. That truck accident has claimed another victim.

The wreck occurred on July 11 just east of the exit for Ocmulgee Boulevard. Around 5:30 p.m., a tractor-trailer driven by a 49-year-old man slammed into a pickup truck and a Chevy Cobalt near a road work zone. Two people were killed at the scene. One woman who suffered trauma in the accident went into cardiac arrest and died later at Navicent Health medical center.

Many of the victims were traveling with a group from Greater New Friendship Baptist Church to a revival. Several remain in critical condition.

What Caused the I-16 Truck Accident?

The driver of the tractor-trailer was charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and one count of aggressive driving.

Although truck drivers are specialized professionals, this does not make them immune to the stresses of driving and life in general. Issues like running late or personal problems can affect the way a truck driver drives. Additionally, truckers are often incentivized to drive faster or for longer due to how they are often paid, such as by the truckload or by the mile. Aggressive behaviors while driving a truck can put everyone around that truck at risk; after all, these vehicles can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. At highway speeds, they essentially become massive metal missile, capable of catastrophic damage to life and property.
