What Caused the Atlanta Bus Accident in June?

In early June, a devastating bus accidentleft 40 people injured and a 17-year-old girl dead. The crash occurred in Atlanta when the bus hit a car on a four-lane road while attempting to change lanes. After striking the other vehicle, the bus driver steered to the left, losing control of the bus. It barreled through an uneven median and rolled onto its roof, pinning another car underneath.

The passengers were on their way from Mount Zion Baptist Church to the Atlanta airport on a mission trip to Botswana.

There are many different causes and types of bus accidents, but among them, rollover accidents are among the deadliest. Many factors can contribute to a rollover: speeding, striking a curb or other object and mechanical failure are common causes.

Buses are normally safer for passengers because of their height relative to other vehicles. But this height is a double-edged sword; while the average bus rider is higher up than other vehicles, the height means that the bus has a higher center of gravity, making it more likely to tip onto the side or roof.

Injuries that can be sustained in a rollover include injuries from intruding bus parts, projectiles flying within the bus, ejection from the vehicle through easily-removed windows and injuries from fire. If you have suffered injury in a bus crash, a personal injury attorney can help you determine if you are eligible for damages.
