The Problem of Road Rage in Georgia

iStock-92373920-resize-300x200.jpgA fender bender in DeKalb County, Georgia turned deadly after one driver shot another, killing him. The driver of a beige pickup truck slightly rear-ended a silver Lexus, and when the driver of the Lexus got out of his vehicle and approached the truck, the driver fired a single shot through his closed driver side window. The shooter than remained at the scene until police arrived.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what caused the pickup driver to shoot the other driver, but reporters indicated that road rage seemed to be the problem.

Road Rage Statistics

According to SafeMotorist, 66 percent of traffic fatalities involve aggressive driving. 37 percent of aggressive driving incidents involve a firearm, and half of drivers who are on the receiving end of an aggressive road action admit to responding with aggressive behaviors themselves. Even scarier - 2 percent of drivers admit that they have tried to run another aggressive driver off the road.

The best way to remain safe from road rage drivers is to consider your own driving habits. For example, do you frequently use a cell phone while driving, or drive distracted in some other way? Do you keep your high beams on despite incoming traffic? Do you switch lanes without using a turn signal, or frequently cut other drivers off? If so, you could become a target for someone having a bad day.

Georgia police have an important message for people involved in accidents, no matter how minor: when you get into an accident, sit in your vehicle, call 911, wait for police to arrive. You never know who is going to be in the other vehicle.
