Is There a Support Group for Pedestrian Accident Victims?

accident-skyview-300x200.jpgThe Macon-Bibb Pedestrian Safety Review Board recently announced that it wants to create a support group for families impacted by pedestrian fatalities. The group voted on May 16 to recommend to commissioners to approve the initiative.

The friends and relatives of those killed in pedestrian accidents are not often thought of, according to board member Violet Poe. This support group would provide counseling as well as connect those who have lost loved ones to others who are going through the same thing in hopes of promoting healing.

Macon-Bibb Pushes Pedestrian Safety

The support group initiative is just one of many avenues that the Pedestrian Safety Review Board has tackled recently to reduce the rate of pedestrian accidents. The "Cross the Walk" initiative began in March of this year and involves sending the group's mascots, Peddy and Pedora the Pedestrians, around Macon-Bibb county to emphasize the importance of pedestrian safety at and around schools.

Peddy and Pedora have been working hard as summer approaches and school comes closer to an end for the semester. Street crossing among children and teens reaches its peak during the summer months, so enforcing these safe crossing behaviors now can help reduce the potential for pedestrian accidents while school is out.

In June 2017, the Macon campus of Middle Georgia State University will be hosting a statewide summit with Pedestrians Educating Drivers on Safety (PEDS) which works to bring pedestrian-friendly policies, plans and street designs.
