A bus driver from Brooks County is facing several charges, including cruelty to children, after a crash left 20 children injured. State police say that the driver lost control of his school bus and ran off the road, before jumping back on the road and continuing his route. While the injuries to the children were minor, things like busted lips and bloody noses, the driver failed to stop at the scene of the accident. He made six more stops before reaching his destination at North Brooks Elementary School. Despite knowing about the many injuries, the driver did not stop to report the accident.

The school district is reviewing surveillance video taken from the bus. The district says that the driver has a clean record.

Dangers to Kids on School Buses

According to statistics from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), bus drivers present one of the biggest risks to children riding on buses. School bus drivers are three times more likely to run over a child than cars driving near school buses. Furthermore, driver error contributes to the vast majority of motor vehicle accidents, including bus accidents. Drunk driving, distracted driving, driver fatigue and even malicious intent on the part of the driver are all common causes of bus accidents.

Fortunately, students on school buses are very safe. The height of school buses, combined with the compartmental design of the seats, help make school buses the safest method of transporting young students by a factor of seven.
