University of Georgia Receives Grant to Fund Road Safety Research

iStock_35677534_LARGE-300x200.jpgThanks to a grant from the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), the University of Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute (GTIPI) will have $656,000 in extra cash to continue statewide parent and teen driving safety, senior driver education and child passenger safety programs. The four programs that will benefit are:

  • National Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) Certification Program, which trains people to give one-on-one personal instruction to parents on how to properly install and use child car seats.
  • Georgia Teens Ride With P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error), which trains instructors on how to bring safe driving tools to Georgia communities while working to reduce teen injuries and fatalities through comprehensive education
  • CarFit, a national program designed for senior drivers to help them stay behind the wheel longer and drive more safely
  • Online Safety Store, a partnership between GOHS and GTIPI that provides traffic safety resources through print and the Internet

GOHS and GTIPI Partnership

GOHS and GTIPI have been working together for the past 30 years to design and deliver education to Georgia drivers. The partnership started in 1986 thanks to federal grant money given to GOHS to be distributed to institutes of higher education for the purpose of reducing the rates of traffic injuries and fatalities in the state of Georgia.

Given that 2016 saw a decade high rate of roadway deaths in our state, we hope that the grants will help turn this disturbing trend around.
