What Is the Price of a Truck Accident? Settling the Losses but Not the Pain

iStock_26680344_MEDIUM-768x510.jpgLast time in our blog series What Is the Price of a Truck Accident?, we talked about the infamous 2015 eight vehicle pile-up on I-16. That crash took the lives of five Georgia Southern University students, and it changed the lives of not only the families of the victims, but an entire university. However, the effects of this crash have rippled on for years as the survivors are still picking up the pieces of their lives.

The Price of a Truck Accident

One of the survivors of this horrible crash was the driver of the truck that caused the deadly pile up. The man was from Shreveport, and this wasn't his first disastrous truck crash. In his previous truck driving position, he fell asleep at the wheel and rolled a semi, but despite this, he was still hired by Total Transportation of Mississippi (TTM).

In this latest crash, the man didn't fall asleep but he couldn't clearly identify what went wrong. Investigators ruled out cellphone use, but something definitely went wrong that day. The driver pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree vehicular homicide and will receive five years in prison and five years of probation.

One of the two girls from GSU that survived the horrible crash joined the families of her fallen classmates in a lawsuit against TTM and its parent company. That case was settled with an undisclosed amount back in April of 2016, but the other girl who survived was having more difficulty.

After being taken to the hospital she was moved to another medical facility where she struggled to overcome the traumatic brain injury she had suffered during the crash. She has been on a road to recovery ever since, and that is what she told the court when she and her family finally pursued their own civil lawsuit against the trucking company.

On January 20th, the trucking company settled her case for $15 million, yet that doesn't erase the loss she has endured. This GSU student is now a pediatric nurse working at a hospital in Savannah, but she still has on and off issues due to her brain injury and nightmares that haunt her at night.

Trucking accidents carry a heavy price for everyone involved, but there are ways to prevent them, and ways to help those who fall victim to them.
