Distracted Driving Awareness Month - What You Need to Know

iStock_35677534_LARGE-768x512.jpgApril is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. So, this month, make it a point to continue to use smart driving habits every time you get behind the wheel.

Distracted Driving in Georgia

Texting and driving as well as other smartphone use is the biggest problem when it comes to distracted driving in Georgia. Research shows that drivers are 23 times more likely to get into car crashes when they are texting or emailing or otherwise using a smartphone. Drivers are six times more likely to get into an accident when simply dialing a phone number.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, over 90 percent of drivers understand that distracted driving is a national epidemic that needs to be addressed. However, 35 percent of those same drivers admitted to having read or sent a text or email while driving within the last 30 days. Over two-thirds admitted to talking on a cell phone while driving.

More Distracted Driving Statistics

  • The National Safety Council says that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million car crashes every year.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average driver distracted by texting takes his or her eyes off the road for five seconds. At highway speeds (55mph), that is long enough for a car to drive the length of a football field, endangering anyone in the car's path.
  • In 2015, 3,477 people died and 391,000 drivers were injured in accidents involving distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
