Is Fiat Chrysler Cheating on Emissions Just Like VW?

mcarthur-logo-m-icon2.pngIn September 2015, Volkswagen was exposed. The company had lied to emission regulators about how much pollutants its diesel vehicles emitted, and the consequences shook the entire industry. Fast-forward to now, and VW is paying $4.3 billion in fines and compensation, but the real surprise is that Fiat Chrysler might also get swept up into the dieselgate madness.

Did the EPA Just Catch Fiat Chrysler Cheating on Emissions Too?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now accusing Fiat Chrysler (FCA) of diesel emissions shenanigans. The federal watchdog says that it has discovered software in FCA diesel light trucks and Jeeps that could affect the vehicles' emissions.

Agency officials say that the software can increase and decrease the level of nitrogen-oxide-a chemical that can harm people's health-but it's not quite sure just how far the software goes. FCA denies that the software is a defeat device, and the president of FCA insists that his company believes it has followed the EPA's regulations.

If FCA is found to have been violating EPA rules just like VW was, the company could face billions of dollars in fines. It could also face lawsuits from angry customers who feel they were duped by FCA just like VW duped its customers. What do you think?

Did FCA hide a defeat device in the software on if it's diesel Ram pickup trucks and Jeep SUVs? Should the company face the same consequences as Volkswagen after such a deception?
