Can Volkswagen Buy Your Loyalty Back?

mcarthur-logo-m-icon1.pngEarlier this year, Volkswagen settled with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The settlement was for $15 billion, but that was only the beginning of the process. More problems and settlements have crept up since the dieselgate manufacturers bit the bullet on this case.

Is There Any Loyalty for Volkswagen to Buy Back?

In the middle of court, the attorney from Volkswagen shared a story about a dieselgate victim. He told the court that this man had stripped his VW Golf down to nearly nothing as he tried to turn the vehicle in for a buyback. The car was rejected, but that hasn't stopped others from trying the same thing. U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer condemned such actions and then accepted another dieselgate settlement from VW.

The newest settlement is for $1 billion, and applies to the company's 6-cylinder TDI vehicles. Unlike the 2 liter 4-cylinder TDI vehicles at the center of the $15 billion settlement, it's harder to fix the 6-cyclinder vehicles. Because of this, VW is going to offer a buyback of these vehicles, and compensation to those whose vehicles can be fixed.

Details haven't been completely ironed out yet, but the German marque hopes this will help restore trust and loyalty to its brand. Do you think Volkswagen deserves another chance?
