Is Audi About to Expand VW's Dieselgate Shame?

iStock_67500421_LARGE-768x536.jpgAudi is the luxury arm of the massive Volkswagen automobile empire, so you would expect it to produce high quality products. Well, the automotive marque got pulled into VW's largest corporate flub-dieselgate. Some of the luxury cars had what the EPA described as "defeat devices," which helped the cars cheat on emissions. Only a few models from Audi were affected, and the subsequent recall and incentives seemed to be repairing the company's reputation... That was until authorities discovered Audi also had its own hidden defeat device in addition to VW's.

Dieselgate Is Still Under the Hood at Audi

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is reporting that it may have found another defeat device. This time the device is in the software that runs the transmissions in both gas-powered and diesel-powered Audi luxury vehicles. This announcement makes things harder for Audi's parent company, Volkswagen.

The German conglomerate was hoping to settle pending federal criminal charges during the month of December. However, settlements seem unlikely-or at least more costly-due to this discovery. Finding more defeat devices might also affect the many lawsuits that have been filed against Volkswagen as well. States and private citizens want compensation for being lied to by the automaker, but this revelation could make settling these cases more difficult.

According to CARB, the transmission software in certain Audi vehicles changes the efficiency of its vehicles during testing. Researchers say that the vehicle enters a low emissions mode when the steering wheel is turned less than 15 degrees. This means that an Audi car would run with higher emissions when being driven regularly than it would during emissions testing.

What do you think this new discover will mean for Audi? Can Volkswagen's reputation ever be repaired? Will the victims of dieselgate ever be compensated for being duped by VW's lies?
