Are Dangerous Toys Being Sold this Holiday Season?

iStock_80216711_LARGE-768x477.jpgYour Macon product liability attorneys are back with more items you need to watch out for this holiday season. This time we are going to look at dangerous toys that you should avoid getting your kids during the holidays. These toys were recalled for very good reasons, so you should be aware of them, and aware of where they might be sold.

Dangerous Toys and Why They Are Hazardous

  • Fire Danger- Have you heard about the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7? Well, did you know that the components suspected of failing in that phone can be found in some toys? Take the hoverboard for example. These self-balancing scooters sometimes use lithium-ion batteries that can erupt in flames. Safety experts say to avoid Yuka Clothing, PTX Performance Products, Hype Wireless, Keenford Limited, Boscov's, Swagway, Hoverboard LLC, Digital Gadgets, Overstock.com, and Razor hoverboard brands. All have been recalled due to the risk of fire.
  • Poison- Some toys can be produced with unsafe chemicals or materials that can make them hazardous for your kids. The LaRose Industries Cra-Z-Jewelz Ultimate Gem Jewelry Machine has high levels of lead as does the KHS America Children's Glockenspiel.
  • Choking Hazards- More children are hurt or killed by choking-related toy accidents than by any other toy product safety risk. Products like Target's LED Gel Clings, Alex Toys' Baby Builder Play Sets, and Land of Nod Octopus Rattles were all recalled for their potential choking risks, and many other toys out there are just as dangerous. Products that pose a choking risk often have small pieces that children like to put in their mouths, so watch out.

Where Are Dangerous Toys Being Sold?

Most retail stores have special procedures to help screen out recalled and dangerous children's toys. It's less likely that you'll find any products like these in brick and mortar stores-the internet is another matter. The U.S. Public Interest Research Groups Education Fund has identified several online stores that are still selling recalled toys to the public. Auction sites like eBay were particularly spotlighted for their tendency to have no guards to protect consumers from recalled toys.

It's illegal for anyone to sell you a product that has been recalled for safety reasons. Knowing what products are unsafe is the best way to protect your family, and we want to help.
