Ikea Is Recalling Its Dressers: Do You Know Why?

upset-patient-talking-to-doc.jpgA young mother put her 22-month-old son down for a nap on Valentine's Day. As part of her usual nap time ritual, the mother looked in on her little boy constantly. However, one of those times her son was no longer in bed, and the boy's dresser was tipped over.

Do You Know Why Ikea Is Recalling Its Dressers?

The boy was under the fallen dresser. His mother quickly dug him out from under drawers of clothing and bric-a-brac and called 911. Paramedics rushed the child to the hospital, but it was too late. The little boy passed just two months shy of his second birthday. His parents were devastated.

This tragedy spurred Ikea into a huge recall back in June of this year. The company has offered refunds, anchor kits, and technicians to fix this dresser tip over problem. However, many people still don't know about this recall, and government officials are becoming concerned.

In Minnesota, the government is pushing a bill called the "Stop Tip-over of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth", a.k.a. the STURDY Act. The bill seeks to establish a stability standard for different types of storage furniture like chests, cabinets and dressers. They believe this effort will help prevent future tip over deaths, and they hope this bill will start a nationwide trend.

Do you think Georgia needs a "STURDY Act" to help protect our kids? Do you think Ikea has done enough for the families who have fallen victim to the company's unstable furniture?
