What Is The Price Of Driving Drunk In Georgia?

Did you enjoy your Fourth of July weekend? Well, if it was safe and free of drunk drivers, then you might have the Governor's Office of Highway Safety and the Georgia State Patrol to thank for that. Officers were out in force over the holiday weekend for the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" program. And if the past is any indicator, all of Georgia was a little safer thanks to these officers.

How Do Drunk Driving Programs Keep You Safe?

In the wee morning hours of June 3rd, the police in Marietta had set up a checkpoint due to a traffic collision. At around 2:40 am, officers running the checkpoint noticed a vehicle attempting to drive around the traffic stop, so they pulled the driver over for questioning. The 24-year-old explained that he thought officers had waved him around the checkpoint, but officers didn't buy it. The man was asked to submit to a field sobriety test.

While the test was being administered, the officers found an open container of alcohol, and they immediately arrested the man. Once in the police car, the 24-year-old only made the situation worse by offering the officers beer and cash to secure his release. The man now faces DUI charges, reckless driving charges, open container charges, and charges for trying to bribe a police officer, which has turned one night of irresponsibility into possible jail time and thousands of dollars in fines.

What Is The Price of Driving Drunk in Georgia?

The cost of driving drunk in Georgia can result in 10 days to a year of jail time, community service, driver's license suspension and anywhere between $300-$1,000 in fines, and then it is estimated that you could also pay up to $10,000 in court costs. The man who was arrested on June 3rd will more than likely have to deal with these high costs and more, but luckily nobody was hurt during his alleged drunk driving incident.

Over 670 people have already died this year on Georgia's highways, so we need to thank the police of our fine state for any program that will protect us from suffering anymore loss. Keep following our blog for even more info on how to prevent drunk driving accidents.
