Truck Accident Settlement Reached, But Was Justice Served?

It was supposed to be their last day of rotations at St. Joseph's-Candler Hospital in Savannah when a group of nursing students at Georgia Southern University piled into a few cars and drove onto Interstate 16. These students were on their way to becoming nurses and potentially saving lives, but a Mississippi tractor-trailer shattered those dreams.

The Truck Accident That Changed It All

On April 22, 2015, a truck owned by Total Transportation of Mississippi crashed into a group of seven vehicles at 68 mph. Three people were taken to the hospital with major injuries, while five victims passed on the scene. All five fatalities were nursing students from GSU.

The truck driver would later deny that he had been texting at the time of the crash. He had also been fired from his previous job for falling asleep at the wheel and rolling a tractor-trailer. Nobody was hurt in that incident, but the potential for harm was still there, and Total Transportation of Mississippi still hired this driver. That oversight may have subjected the public at large to unnecessary danger, and so the families of the victims of the April 22nd crash took the Mississippi company to court.

Almost a year after the crash that changed the lives of so many parents, students and faculty at GSU, a settlement was reached. Details were not disclosed, but both the plaintiffs and TTM announced the settlement, and the trucking company apologized. Part of the money from the settlements will go to scholarships for nursing students at Georgia Southern University, but for some, a simple settlement isn't enough.

Rep. Hank Johnson is working on a bill that will require automatic braking systems on all tractor-trailers around the country. These new systems would use sensors to detect if vehicles ahead of the truck have stopped and then would brake accordingly to prevent a collision. This bill could help prevent future crashes like the one that took the lives of these five nursing students, but the trucking industry is trying to oppose its passage. However, can we really afford to take that risk when so many lives could be saved?
