Have You Been Driving While Distracted?

Tuesday, April 12th, a military convoy was stopped outside of Robins Air Force Base, waiting to get in, when a Black Dodge Ram pickup slammed into a Humvee at the rear of the convoy. Like a line of dominoes, vehicles crashed into each other until three Humvees and the pickup sat in a pile of debris. Luckily, no one was killed, but the driver of the Ram was cited for distracted driving. He had been trying to retrieve something in the vehicle when the crash happened.

Most people think that distracted driving only deals with situations involving people texting while driving or talking on the phone while driving, but distracted driving actually encompasses a whole range of activities. Fiddling with your makeup, changing the radio station, and even attending your children while driving can lead to accidents and a distracted driving citation. Now, the Perry Police Department wants do something to fight this growing trend.

How To Fight Distracted Driving

Together with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Perry PD held an undercover distracted driving operation. Officers in plain clothes and an unmarked car spotted drivers who were texting and driving. Those drivers were later pulled over and cited for the infraction, but they were also educated in what exactly distracted driving was.

One officer told WMAZ that most people didn't understand what distracted driving was, and so they were using this program to spread the word about one of the leading causes of automotive accidents. Out of over 1,400 Georgia automotive fatalities last year, 72 percent were caused by distracted driving incidents, and after the wreck near Robins AFB, no one can deny that it is a needed education.
