Georgia Pedestrian Deaths On The Rise -- Is There Any Way To Stop It?

Macon is trying to become a safer place for the people walking on our streets. The Macon-Bibb Pedestrian Fatality Review Board has been taking extra steps to make sure this happens, and the committee has called in help from as far away as Atlanta, but will their efforts help stop the flood of pedestrian deaths in our state?

Georgia Pedestrian Deaths On The Rise

Between 2003 and 2015 there were 950 incidents of vehicles colliding with people. Brad Belo, a planner with the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission, showed these incidents on a map so the Pedestrian Fatality Review Board could see how wide spread this problem is. The map showed Anthony Road, Shurling Drive, Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, and Pio Nono Avenue as the most active hot spots for these accidents in our city, and now the committee is developing strategies to deal with these problems.

How Is Macon Improving Pedestrian Safety?

One strategy suggested by a consultant from Atlanta is instituting the multinational pedestrian safety plan known as Vision Zero to help guide the city's building practices toward designing safer pedestrian crossings, but that isn't the only solution being considered. Violet Poe, another member of the committee, has reached out to the community and discovered that most people either miss available crosswalks or don't feel like walking the extra few feet. To fight this, Poe has enlisted the help of local businesses to spread the word.

Between 2014 and 2015 Georgia had a 21 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities, while the rest of the country only had a 10 percent increase. This means it is especially important to fight these kinds of accidents in our state. To learn how you can help reduce pedestrian accidents, keep following our blog, Facebook and Twitter.
