Can Social Media Fight Aggressive Driving?

Have you heard of the Facebook page "You Can't Drive, Dallas"? It's a social media page created by a retired police officer in The Colony-a suburb of Dallas. You see, his neighborhood was swallowed up by traffic when a new road construction project was started on a nearby highway. His calm neighborhood was suddenly turned into a strange warzone where cars were being used as weapons, and he decided to do something about it.

The former police officer from The Colony opened a Facebook group that was at first restricted to his hometown area and a place nearby called Little Elm. However, the popularity of the page caught him by surprise and he soon opened the page up to the entire Dallas area. When the page was featured on Dallas' WFAA News 8, it had 1,100 likes, and the next day it had over 5,000.

How Did A Facebook Page Fight Aggressive Driving?

"You Can't Drive, Dallas" let Facebook users post the license plates of aggressive drivers, then the former policeman would look up the driver's information and posts their name and city of residence on the website. These revelations have led to anger and apologies as these drivers have slowly come to realize that their driving antics were being reported for the world to see, but with fame comes scrutiny. After the News 8 report, the executives of Facebook noticed the page and immediately shut it down. However, this isn't the end of the story.

The man who created "You Can't Drive, Dallas" is already up to his old tricks. Another Facebook page by the same name has gone up, but now there's a broader assortment of bad driving related media on the page. Do you think "You Can't Drive, Dallas" was a good thing? Would something like it work in Georgia?

Here in Georgia, aggressive driving is actually a misdemeanor! You can get ticketed, fined and sent to jail if you intentionally drive in a way that harasses or intimidates other drivers. To learn more, keep following our blog, and tell us what you think on Facebook and Twitter.
