Is Elder Abuse Going Viral?

Is Elder Abuse Going Viral?

personal-injury.jpgFinding a nursing home where your parents or relatives can live out the rest of their days in comfort and peace is getting harder and harder. People are reporting abuse more frequently, and they are taking these offenders to court so they can pay for their crimes. But as time moves forward, new innovations are arising, and some people are misusing this new wave of technology.

Reports are coming in from all corners of the country that some nursing home workers are using social media to take advantage of people under their care. One nurse coached an elderly patient to sing rap lyrics while holding a sign that said, "Got these **** trained." The nurse recorded a video and posted it to Snapchat. When the video was discovered, the nursing home fired the employee and instituted a new and stricter social media policy, but were their efforts enough?

In another care center, a nursing home employee was found Snapchatting pictures of residents who were inappropriately exposed and had passed away. It was later discovered that other employees had known about what was going on and failed to report the abuse. The group of employees now face charges of elder abuse and failure to report elder abuse, while the nursing home would only say that corrective actions had been taken.

Is Anything Being Done To Stop The Abuse?

Many nursing homes are trying to fight this new form of elder abuse. Facilities are instituting training programs, and many have no cellphone/no social media policies, but still these cases are slipping through the cracks. If you are visiting a loved one in a nursing home, and you see an employee using his or her cellphone or other social media device in a suspicious or inappropriate way, then don't hesitate to tell nursing home administrators or authorities. Your actions could help save other residents from being exploited.

Be sure to also follow up on the incident you reported, and if nothing has been done about the issue, then don't be afraid to contact an attorney. Sometimes a lawsuit can be a powerful agent of change and improvement. To learn more about what you can do to stop elder abuse, keep following our blog and check out our Twitter and Facebook pages.
