Can Georgia Stop Super Speeder Truckers?

Have you ever been passed by someone going way faster than they should? Do you remember how scary it felt, or how much you were angry at the other person for driving so recklessly? Well the politicians of Georgia remember, and they want to do something about it, but how is the Georgia state legislature going to stop super speeders?

In 2010, the Georgia legislature passed a law meant to deter people from excessively speeding. This law added a $200 extra fine to any ticket where the speeder was travelling at more than 85 mph on a highway four lanes or bigger, or 75 mph on a two-lane road. Some critics have argued that such a law is nothing more than a way for the government to collect more funds from the people, but many people see the measure as quite effective, and they want to expand it.

Rep. Ron Stephens of Savannah has submitted a bill called HB732, which is designed to expand the "super speeder" law so it will apply to commercial truck drivers too. If the law passes, it will increase a trucker's fine for excessive speeding, and a companion bill HB707 will also turn "super speeding" from a misdemeanor into a full blown felony. This means that if you are caught going too fast on the road, you could be sentenced to up to five years in jail and receive a fine of up to $5,000.

In 2012, there were 180 speed-related fatalities in Georgia, and that same year there were 149 fatal truck accidents. How many of these crashes could have been stopped if someone just took their foot off the gas? Well, our Georgia state lawmakers want to find out.

Do you think their plan will work? Do you think new fines and a felony penalty are enough? Visit our Facebook and Twitterpages to let us know.
