Georgia drivers should expect to see more farm vehicles on the roadways now that harvest season is in full swing. During this time of year, farmers are transporting things from field to field in equipment that is designed to be used on the fields.

Since tractors travel at speeds much slower than cars on the highway, if drivers aren’t careful, this could be a recipe for disaster, state troopers say.

In Georgia this year, there have been collisions where fast-moving vehicles collided with farm vehicles, causing serious injuries and even fatalities.

In 2014, more than 500 collisions involving farm and construction equipment was reported, according to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The accidents resulted in 22 fatalities. So far this year, four fatalities have been tallied.

Authorities say there are multiple factors that could lead to accidents involving cars and farm equipment, including distracted driving and speeding.

The orange triangle on the back of the equipment indicates the farm vehicles are slow-moving vehicles.
