Is There a Correlation Between Energy Drinks and Traumatic Brain Injuries?

Researchers have found that teens who reported having a traumatic brain injury in the past year were seven times more likely to report drinking different brands of energy drinks in the last week, compared to teens who did not have a traumatic brain injury.

The new report looked at 2013 survey information from over 10,000 students from 7th to 12th grade. Teens who experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the last year were also at least twice as likely to report drinking energy drinks spiked with vodka or other types of alcoholic drinks . Teens who got a TBI while playing contact sports had double the odds of drinking energy drinks, compared to teens who suffered a TBI from non-sports injuries.

Study authors reported the use of energy drinks and alcohol among teens is of particular concern. Prior studies have found that caffeine can mask the effects of alcohol, making it more difficult for people to determine when they should stop drinking.

The researchers cannot determine a causal link between energy drinks and TBIs based on their data. Ilie said the effects of energy drinks on the brain is still not very well understood, and more research is necessary to better understand the connection.
