Did You Always Know You Wanted to Be an Attorney?

Personal injury attorney Kathy McArthur has practiced law in Macon, Georgia for over thirty years. But what led her to becoming an attorney in Georgia? She didn’t always know she wanted to be an attorney until she worked for a law firm that sealed her decision in pursuing law. There she was exposed to personal injury, medical malpractice, and trial work. She was most inspired by the fact that they helped people, the injured party, and not businesses. Watch this video as Kathy McArthur details her decisions in becoming the lawyer she is today.

I went to the University of North Carolina in 1972, graduated in 1976, and went straight to law school not because I knew I wanted to be a lawyer but because I knew I didn’t want to do the jobs that were available to me at that time. I had interviewed, I’d been going all over the country looking at jobs, and I just knew they weren’t for me. So I went to law school thinking that might be what I would do. I’m not one of the people who knew from the beginning they wanted to be an attorney because I didn’t even know an attorney. So, by default somewhat I went to law school, I graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1979 and immediately moved to Georgia. And one of the amazing things and one of the the most miraculous parts of what happened to me is not knowing that I wanted to be an attorney at all. I left law school, moved to Macon, Georgia and immediately got with the law firm that did personal injury, medical malpractice, trial work, where we represented injured parties. Always people, never insurance companies, or businesses, we always represented the injured party, and I found my niche. So, I immediately fell into a job that was perfect for me and I did like the Malcom Gladwell books say to do, I put my 10,000 hours in, it seems like probably in about the first five years. Nose to the grindstone, became a trial attorney, learned how to do my trade, and to be I hope really excellent at it. And I stayed with Carl Reynolds who was my senior partner there in the law firm of Reynolds and McArthur for 28 years.
